Getting Your Acupuncture Questions Answered From A Minnesota Licensed Acupuncturist

Have you wanted a natural treatment and wondered about Acupuncture but weren’t quite sure if it was for you?  Getting answers to your questions from someone who is a licensed acupuncturist, or a doctor of Oriental Medicine is what you need to alleviate those concerns.
At Achieve Health Chiropractic and Acupuncture we can answer all your questions concerning Acupuncture.

Some of the most common questions are:

• Will It Hurt Me?
• How Do I find a good acupuncturist?
• Do I have to believe in acupuncture?
• Can children receive acupuncture?
• Are there any side effects?
• How Big are the needles and how deep are they inserted?

Let’s start with the first question:

Will it hurt me?  Acupuncture should be painless, although some people experience a slight sharp sensation depending on how sensitive they are, and where the needles are inserted.

How do I find a good acupuncturist?  Look for one who is a licensed  acupuncturist (L.Ac) or a doctor of Oriental medicine (O.M.D. or D.O.M.).  The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) has standards that have been adopted by most states, and you can search their database “NCCAOM.org” by state to see who is licensed.

Do I have to believe in Acupuncture?  Of course a positive attitude and state of mind will help any healing process but it is not necessary that you believe in acupuncture for the treatment to be successful.

Can children receive Acupuncture?  Yes.  Children’s energy is very responsive so they do well with acupuncture.  Their course of treatment may also be shorter and fewer needles are required.  But the younger the child, the more training the licensed practitioner needs.

Are there any side effects?  Common side effects are deep relaxation or even mild disorientation immediately following treatments.  These pass within a short time, and never require more than a bit of rest to overcome.

How big are the needles and how deep are they inserted?  The needles are about as thin as a human hair.  Unlike the hollow needles used for injecting medicine, acupuncture needles are solid.  The acupuncturist will insert them to a depth of anywhere from a quarter of an inch to three inches depending on the subcutaneous fat that the needles need to penetrate.
