Chiropractic Helping Children with Attention Deficit Disorder

Chiropractic and ADD/ADHD

While chiropractors don’t treat Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the effects of chiropractic care on children who have been diagnosed with learning disorders and hyperactivity has been described in an increasing   number of scholarly publications. Chiropractic, with its holistic and conservative approach to patient care has become the most popular choice of all the alternative therapies.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Children?

Chiropractic has plenty of documented evidence of the effectiveness of Chiropractic care.  It’s safe for children and can have beneficial effects on health and fitness from newborn to adults. Many parents are apprehensive of the traditional medical approach to ADD/ADHD. Doctors of Chiropractic have results with non-drug treatments that focus on postural muscles, nutrition and lifestyle changes that effect brain activity.  The number of prescriptions written for methylphenidate (Ritalin) has increased since 1991. The production of Adderall and Dexedrine, also used to treat ADHD, has risen 2,000% in nine years.

Children and ADD/ADHD

Children with ADD/ADHD often have difficulties with impulse control, attention span, restlessness, blurting out words or phrases, difficultly staying on task and reading comprehension. Often these children have an amazing memory. They do math facts without word problems, can read the words on a page but have difficulty understanding the concepts after they read it.  This is because they have a functionally strong left brain relative to the right brain. The problem develops because there is a functional disconnection between the hemispheres of the brain. It is like an orchestra where there is one part not working in concert with the rest which throws the whole production off.

Doctors of Chiropractic, advocate treating behavioral issues in children with a multi-dimensional approach. Recommending regular chiropractic adjustments, making dietary recommendations to reduce or eliminate foods that may contribute to the issues, and including a nutritional supplementation to balance body chemistry. In the chiropractic community, the practice is that this diagnosis is often helped by drug free chiropractic care.  The goal is to eliminate their medications. Many report terminating drug therapy, and seeing the personality, spirit and soul of the children unfold!!!
