As a chiropractor, acupuncturist, and nutritionist, I see people every day dealing with health problems that can have physical, emotional, and chemical components. My job is to help the body function better—to reduce physical stress, improve movement, support the nervous system, and help create an environment where the body can do what it was designed to do: heal, repair, and adapt.

But I’m only part of the answer. What can you do as a patient? Actually, quite a lot.

Sleep well. Your body needs adequate sleep to recover, repair, regulate hormones, and restore the nervous system.

Eat good food. Give your body the protein, vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and other nutrients it needs to rebuild itself.

Exercise. Strength, cardiovascular fitness, and regular movement are some of the best medicine we have.

Stretch and stay mobile. Your body was designed to move. Keeping joints and muscles moving helps maintain function as we age.

Get outside and get some sunlight. Natural light, fresh air, and outdoor activity are good for both physical and emotional health.

Work on your attitude and stress. Emotional stress is still stress. What happens in the mind can absolutely affect what happens in the body.

Keep the bad stuff out. Don’t smoke. Limit alcohol. Minimize highly processed foods and other things that continually place unnecessary stress on your body.

Use medications appropriately. Medications can be extremely important when they’re needed. But when lifestyle changes can reduce the need for unnecessary medications—with your prescribing doctor’s guidance—that’s a win too.

The human body has an incredible ability to heal when we give it the right environment.

I can adjust you. I can use acupuncture. I can help with nutrition. I can work on muscles, joints, movement, and the nervous system.

But then you leave my office. And that’s when your part of the treatment begins. What you eat, how you sleep, whether you exercise, how you manage stress, what you put into your body, and the choices you make every day can have a tremendous effect on your health.

As far as I’m concerned, I’ve got the easier of the two jobs.

I may get you for a little while each week. You get you the rest of the time.
