Shoulder pain can make everyday activities difficult, including reaching overhead, getting dressed, exercising, lifting objects, and sleeping comfortably.
At Achieve Health Chiropractic & Acupuncture in Champlin, Minnesota, we provide individualized, conservative care designed to help reduce shoulder discomfort, improve mobility, and restore function.
Whether you’re experiencing shoulder stiffness, an overuse injury, or frozen shoulder, our goal is to identify contributing factors and help you return to your normal activities.
Common Causes of Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain can develop gradually or occur following an injury. Common causes include:
Rotator cuff irritation and tendinopathy
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
Shoulder impingement symptoms
Muscle strains and overuse injuries
Bursitis
Joint stiffness and restricted mobility
Poor posture and altered shoulder mechanics
Neck-related referred pain
Because several conditions can produce similar symptoms, a thorough assessment is important before beginning treatment.
What is Frozen Shoulder?
Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition involving pain and progressive stiffness of the shoulder joint.
As the shoulder capsule becomes inflamed and stiff, movement becomes increasingly restricted. Both active movement and passive range of motion may be affected.
Frozen shoulder commonly progresses through three overlapping stages.
1. Freezing Stage
What Is Frozen Shoulder?
Pain gradually increases while shoulder mobility decreases. Nighttime discomfort is common, and everyday activities may become difficult.
2. Frozen Stage
Pain may begin to decrease, but significant stiffness remains. Reaching overhead, behind the back, or across the body may be particularly challenging.
3. Thawing Stage
Shoulder mobility gradually improves as stiffness decreases. Recovery can take months and sometimes longer.
Not everyone progresses through these stages in exactly the same way.
Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder
Common symptoms include:

Progressive shoulder stiffness
Difficulty raising the arm overhead
Limited internal and external rotation
Difficulty reaching behind the back
Pain when lying on the affected shoulder
Nighttime shoulder discomfort
Difficulty dressing, bathing, or fastening a seat belt
Frozen shoulder is more common in adults between 40 and 60 and in people with diabetes or certain thyroid disorders.
Our Approach to Shoulder Pain Treatment
At Achieve Health Chiropractic & Acupuncture, we use a combination of conservative therapies based on each patient’s examination findings, symptoms, and tolerance.
Chiropractic Care
We assess the shoulder, cervical spine, thoracic spine, and surrounding musculoskeletal structures.
When appropriate, gentle joint mobilization and chiropractic treatment may help address associated movement restrictions and mechanical discomfort.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture may help reduce shoulder pain and muscle tension, making movement and therapeutic exercise more comfortable for some patients.
React Magnetic Table
Our office also offers REACT magnetic neuromuscular therapy, which may be used to help address muscle pain, spasms, and neuromuscular dysfunction.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Electrical stimulation may be used when appropriate to help manage pain and muscle tension around the shoulder.
Rehabilitation and Home Exercises
Gentle mobility exercises, stretching, and progressive strengthening are important components of shoulder rehabilitation.
For frozen shoulder, exercise intensity should be matched to the stage of the condition. Aggressive stretching during a highly painful phase may aggravate symptoms.
We provide individualized home exercise guidance to support recovery between appointments.
Can Chiropractic and Acupuncture Help Frozen Shoulder?
Conservative treatment may help some patients manage pain, maintain comfortable movement, and gradually improve shoulder function.
Acupuncture and chiropractic care may be used as complementary approaches and can help to shorten the duration of frozen shoulder.
Depending on the severity and stage, additional medical treatments such as physical therapy or corticosteroid injections may be appropriate.
Our focus is on providing supportive care, realistic expectations, and appropriate referrals when necessary.
When Should You Seek Evaluation?
Consider having shoulder pain evaluated if:
Pain persists or continues worsening
Shoulder movement becomes increasingly restricted
Pain interferes with sleep
You have difficulty performing normal daily activities
Symptoms begin following an injury
Your shoulder is not improving with rest and basic self-care
Sudden severe pain following trauma, marked weakness, deformity, fever with a hot swollen joint, or shoulder pain accompanied by chest pain or breathing difficulty warrants prompt medical evaluation.
