Keeping Kids Active, Healthy, and in the Game: The Role of Chiropractic Care in Youth Sports

By Achieve Health Chiropractic & Acupuncture | Champlin, MN

As parents, we want our children to be healthy, active, and able to enjoy the sports they love. Whether it’s football, hockey, soccer, lacrosse, or another activity, youth sports offer incredible opportunities to develop confidence, teamwork, discipline, and lifelong healthy habits.

But with sports also come physical demands, repetitive movements, occasional injuries, and the wear and tear of practices and competition.

As both a chiropractor and a father of four, this is something I understand firsthand.

My Personal Experience Raising Four Young Athletes

All four of my children participated in competitive sports throughout their childhood, high school years, and even into college.

Between football, soccer, hockey, and lacrosse, our family spent countless hours at practices, games, tournaments, and sporting events.

Throughout those years, my children performed well, stayed active, and fortunately avoided major injuries that could have significantly interrupted their athletic careers.

I’m not sharing this to take credit for their accomplishments. Their dedication, hard work, coaching, and commitment were what made them successful.

However, regular chiropractic care was one component of our family’s approach to maintaining their physical health.

We didn’t necessarily wait until someone was injured or experiencing significant pain before paying attention to how their body was moving and feeling.

And that’s something I encourage other parents to consider.

Chiropractic Care Isn’t Just for Adults with Back Pain

Many people associate chiropractic care with adults suffering from neck pain, back pain, or headaches.

But active children and teenagers can also experience muscle tension, joint discomfort, restricted movement, and overuse problems.

Consider the physical demands placed on young athletes:

* Hockey players repeatedly skate, twist, accelerate, and absorb contact.
* Football players experience physical collisions and repetitive strain.
* Soccer players continuously run, cut, pivot, and kick.
* Lacrosse players combine running, rotation, throwing, and physical contact.

Over time, these activities can contribute to discomfort, muscular imbalances, and movement restrictions.

Chiropractic care offers a conservative approach to evaluating and addressing certain musculoskeletal complaints, with treatment tailored to each child’s age, development, and individual needs.

Potential Benefits of Chiropractic Care for Young Athletes

For children experiencing musculoskeletal problems, appropriate chiropractic care may help with:

1. Improving Comfort and Mobility

Addressing certain joint restrictions and muscle tension may help young athletes move more comfortably during everyday activities and sports.

2. Managing Sports-Related Aches and Pains

Growing athletes sometimes experience neck discomfort, back pain, and other musculoskeletal complaints related to training and competition.

3. Identifying Movement Concerns

A musculoskeletal evaluation may identify mobility limitations or movement problems worth addressing through appropriate treatment, strengthening, rehabilitation, or referral.

4. Supporting Healthy Movement Habits

Education about posture, recovery, flexibility, strengthening, and proper movement can help children develop habits that support long-term physical activity.

5. Encouraging a Proactive Approach to Health

One of the most valuable lessons we can teach our children is to pay attention to their bodies rather than ignoring discomfort until it becomes a bigger problem.

While chiropractic care can help certain musculoskeletal conditions, it’s important to understand that regular adjustments have not been proven to prevent sports injuries or directly improve athletic performance in otherwise healthy children.

It’s About More Than Winning Games

As a father, I wasn’t simply interested in whether my children scored goals, made the starting lineup, or won championships.

I wanted them to enjoy their sports, remain physically active, and develop healthy habits that would carry into adulthood.

Looking back, I’m grateful they were able to participate at competitive levels without major injury setbacks.

I believe there’s tremendous value in teaching children about movement, recovery, appropriate exercise, nutrition, and caring for their bodies.

Chiropractic care can be one part of that broader approach when a child has a musculoskeletal concern that may benefit from treatment.
