Does Research Support Chiropractic Care?

Research Supporting Chiropractic Care Numerous studies have shown that chiropractic treatment is both safe and effective.  The following are excerpts from a few of the more recent studies.  By examining the research supporting chiropractic care, you will find that chiropractic offers tremendous potential in meeting today’s health care challenges. For Acute and Chronic Pain “Patients with chronic low-back pain treated by chiropractors showed greater improvement and satisfaction at one month than patients treated by family physicians. Satisfaction scores were higher for chiropractic patients. A higher proportion of chiropractic patients (56 percent vs. 13 percent) reported that their low-back pain was better or much better, whereas nearly one-third of medical patients reported their low-back pain was worse or much worse.” – Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Nyiendo et al. (2000), In a Randomized controlled trial, 183 patients with neck pain were randomly allocated to manual therapy (spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (mainly exercise) or general practitioner care (counseling, education and drugs) in a 52-week study. The clinical outcomes measures showed that manual therapy resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Moreover, total costs of the manual therapy-treated patients were about one-third of the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care. — British Medical Journal, Korthals-de Bos et al. (2003) In Comparison to Other Treatment Alternatives “Acute and chronic chiropractic patients experienced better outcomes in pain, functional disability, and patient satisfaction; clinically important differences in pain and disability improvement were found for chronic patients.” – Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Haas et al. (2005) “In our randomized, controlled trial, we compared the effectiveness of manual therapy, physical therapy,...

Who Is At Risk For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Who is at risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome? Women are three times more likely than men to develop carpal tunnel syndrome, perhaps because the carpal tunnel itself may be smaller in women than in men.  The dominant hand is usually affected first and produces the most severe pain.  Persons with diabetes or other metabolic disorders that directly affect the body’s nerves and make them more susceptible to compression are also at high risk.  Carpal tunnel syndrome usually occurs only in adults. The risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome is not confined to people in a single industry or job, but is especially common in those performing assembly line work – manufacturing, sewing, finishing, cleaning, and meat, poultry, or fish packing.  In fact, carpal tunnel syndrome is three times more common among assemblers than among data-entry personnel.  A 2001 study by the Mayo Clinic found heavy computer use (up to 7 hours a day) did not increase a person’s risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome. During 1998, an estimated three of every 10,000 workers lost time from work because of carpal tunnel syndrome.  Half of these workers missed more than 10 days of work.  The average lifetime cost of carpal tunnel syndrome, including medical bills and lost time from work, is estimated to be about $30,000 for each injured worker. Acupuncture and chiropractic care have benefited many patients.  Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful disorder that acupuncture has been very successful at treating.  Treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome should begin as early as possible. Acupuncture therapies can achieve balance throughout your body, which can correct many problems.  With these...
