Many patients are told they have costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage where the ribs meet the breastbone) when they experience chest pain. While costochondritis is certainly a real condition, some cases of chest and upper back pain may actually be related to restricted or irritated rib joints and surrounding muscles.
Common Symptoms of Costochondritis and Rib Dysfunction
Patients may experience:
- Chest pain or tenderness near the breastbone
- Pain when taking a deep breath
- Pain with coughing or sneezing
- Pain that wraps around the ribs
- Upper back pain between the shoulder blades
- Shoulder pain
- Arm pain or aching
- Pain when twisting at the waist
- Pain reaching or lifting the arms overhead
- Difficulty sleeping comfortably on one side
- Pain with certain movements but normal cardiac testing
Because these symptoms can mimic heart, lung, or gastrointestinal conditions, it is important to rule out serious medical causes first.
Why the Ribs Matter
The ribs attach both to the breastbone in front and the spine in back. When a rib joint becomes restricted or irritated, it can create pain that radiates into the chest, upper back, shoulder, or even down the arm.
Many patients are surprised to learn that what feels like a shoulder problem or chest problem may actually be originating from the rib cage.
How Chiropractic Care May Help
A chiropractic examination can evaluate:
- Rib joint motion
- Thoracic spine mobility
- Posture
- Muscle tension and trigger points
- Breathing mechanics
Treatment may include:
- Gentle chiropractic adjustments
- Soft tissue therapy
- Acupuncture
- Corrective exercises
- Postural recommendations
The goal is to restore proper movement and reduce irritation of the affected joints and tissues.
When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention
Chest pain should never be ignored. Seek immediate medical care if symptoms include:
- Crushing or pressure-like chest pain
- Shortness of breath
- Dizziness or fainting
- Pain radiating into the jaw
- Sudden sweating
- Symptoms associated with exertion
These may indicate a medical emergency requiring immediate evaluation.
