MN Chiropractor talks about how coughing and sneezing can “throw out” your back.

Did you know that a sneeze or cough can have a speed of 40  to 167 mph?    If you think about it, your body has to withstand plenty of force by contracting and bracing the spine and the surrounding muscles.

Its not uncommon to get headaches, neck pain, upper back pain, middle back pain, and even lower back pain after a forceful cough or sneeze.  The force of the cough or sneeze can misaligned the spine enough to create pressure on the nerves.  The type of pain that occurs after such a cough or sneeze is usually sharp, but can be dull, and can linger for days or weeks.  The patients that comment on this type of injury relate it closely to “whiplash”.
