As the weather improves and summer activities fill our calendars, roads become busier with vacations, sporting events, cabin trips, and family gatherings. While most people understand that speeding is dangerous, there is another risk that often goes unnoticed: being in a hurry.

Many accidents don’t happen because someone is driving excessively fast. They happen because someone is rushing.

When we’re running late, our mindset changes. We follow vehicles too closely, take unnecessary chances at intersections, weave through traffic, and become impatient with other drivers. We convince ourselves that arriving one or two minutes earlier is worth the risk.

In reality, those few minutes rarely make a meaningful difference.

What does make a difference is the increased risk of an accident.

The “hurry mindset” reduces reaction time and increases stress behind the wheel. Drivers become more focused on getting somewhere quickly rather than getting there safely. Tailgating, abrupt lane changes, distracted driving, and aggressive driving behaviors often stem from simply feeling rushed.

Unfortunately, even low-speed collisions can have lasting consequences.

At our office, we frequently see patients dealing with neck pain, headaches, back pain, shoulder injuries, and stiffness following motor vehicle accidents. Sometimes symptoms appear immediately. Other times they don’t develop until days or even weeks later.

A moment of impatience can lead to months of discomfort and recovery.

As summer travel season continues, consider giving yourself a little extra time before leaving home. Plan ahead, expect delays, and remind yourself that arriving safely is more important than arriving a few minutes earlier.

A good rule of thumb:

Slow down. Leave earlier. Stay patient.

The goal isn’t simply to reach your destination—it’s to arrive healthy enough to enjoy it.
