MN Family Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Care Is For EVERYBODY! One of the most traumatic events of a person’s life is their entrance into the world.  Birth places a tremendous amount of pressure and strain on a baby’s fragile spine, especially the delicate neck.  Throughout childhood, you probably have sustained a series of minor injuries and sadly some of you may have experiences some major injuries as well.  Think about how you have fallen from a bicycle or a skateboard, or numerous wrestling matches with your siblings.  As you grew up, you encountered playground hazards and gym classes; team sports and the improper use of backpacks.  Maybe you slept on a bad mattress or strained your back while carrying a heavy load. Do You Think Chiropractic Is Just For The injured & The Elderly? Some of you may have experienced the granddaddy of neck and back trauma – automobile accidents!  Auto accidents commonly cause a significant spinal injury and trauma.  Even so-called minor accidents can inflict tremendous injuries to your spine.  Even if you did not experience any lasting discomfort or pain at the time of these incidents, these spinal injuries accumulate throughout your life and will cause Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC).  VSC occurs when one or more of the bones in your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves.  Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones of your spine. The pressure of irritation on the nerves causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves.  This pressure can result in both peripheral and/or systemic...

Chiropractic Care For Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist.  The Carpal Tunnel – a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hand houses the median nerve and tendons.  Sometimes, thickening from irritated tendons or other swelling narrows the tunnel and causes the median nerve to be compressed.  The result may be pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm.  Although painful sensations may indicate other conditions, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common and widely known of the entrapment neuropathies in which the body’s peripheral nerves are compressed or traumatized.  Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling, or itching numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers, especially the thumb and the index and middle fingers.  Some Carpal Tunnel sufferers say their fingers feel useless and swollen, even though little or no swelling is apparent. The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms often first appear in one or both hands during the night, since many people sleep with flexed wrists.  A person with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may wake up feeling the need to “shake out” the hand or wrist.  As Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Symptoms worsen, people might feel tingling during the day.  Decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks.  In chronic and/or untreated cases, the muscles at the base of the thumb may waste away.  Some people are unable to tell between hot and cold by...

Does Research Support Chiropractic Care?

Research Supporting Chiropractic Care Numerous studies have shown that chiropractic treatment is both safe and effective.  The following are excerpts from a few of the more recent studies.  By examining the research supporting chiropractic care, you will find that chiropractic offers tremendous potential in meeting today’s health care challenges. For Acute and Chronic Pain “Patients with chronic low-back pain treated by chiropractors showed greater improvement and satisfaction at one month than patients treated by family physicians. Satisfaction scores were higher for chiropractic patients. A higher proportion of chiropractic patients (56 percent vs. 13 percent) reported that their low-back pain was better or much better, whereas nearly one-third of medical patients reported their low-back pain was worse or much worse.” – Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Nyiendo et al. (2000), In a Randomized controlled trial, 183 patients with neck pain were randomly allocated to manual therapy (spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (mainly exercise) or general practitioner care (counseling, education and drugs) in a 52-week study. The clinical outcomes measures showed that manual therapy resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Moreover, total costs of the manual therapy-treated patients were about one-third of the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care. — British Medical Journal, Korthals-de Bos et al. (2003) In Comparison to Other Treatment Alternatives “Acute and chronic chiropractic patients experienced better outcomes in pain, functional disability, and patient satisfaction; clinically important differences in pain and disability improvement were found for chronic patients.” – Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Haas et al. (2005) “In our randomized, controlled trial, we compared the effectiveness of manual therapy, physical therapy,...

Chiropractic Care For Whiplash Victims

Have You Been Involved In An Auto Accident? Most whiplash injuries occur while sitting stationary in your car, usually from a rear-end collision. They can also be caused by any force that causes your head to snap back and forth in a traumatic manner, even while playing. What happens seconds after the accident can have tragic consequences. What you do about it hours, days even weeks after, can forever affect your health. In a rear-end collision and upon impact, your body pushes deeply into your seat. Your head, momentarily isolated by your neck, delays its reaction while your body quickly reaches the limits of your seat. Your body then instantly changes directions, moving forward to the limits of your seat belt. Now, your head starts moving backward in the opposite direction. Unrestrained by a seat belt, your head is jerked back and then forward beyond its normal limits. Don’t be mislead by the minimal damage to your vehicle; people react differently than glass, plastic and metal. An immediate chiropractic examination is essential. Pain medication won’t heal inflamed tendons and ligaments. Muscle relaxers won’t heal torn muscles. A cervical collar won’t restore a graceful forward spinal curve. Specific chiropractic spinal adjustments help assure proper healing by restoring proper motion and position of individual spinal bones. Consider chiropractic and acupuncture to help restore proper motion, proper positioning of spinal bones, and to speed healing.  We can help you get well and stay well after the trauma of whiplash injury.
